Lip fillers are a very popular cosmetic procedure due to the beautiful, natural results that can be easily customized to fit the needs of each patient.

What happens before a lip filler procedure?

Before receiving lip fillers, patients will need to consult with their injection specialist to determine which type of fillers will be best suited to provide the desired results, as well as review any pre-treatment instructions and provide the specialist with the medical history of the patient. There are several different types of fillers available that may be better suited for each patient’s specific needs or goals, making this an essential step in allowing the injection specialist to attain a clear idea of what the patient wants. Instructions are provided at this time to ensure that the patient is well-prepared for their lip filler procedure, including an outline of any medications, products, or procedures that should be avoided leading up to the appointment.

Before the lip filler procedure starts on the day of the appointment, the injection specialist will review with the patient regarding the exact results they are looking for so that they can accurately map out all the areas of the lips that will be receiving filler.

What happens during a lip filler procedure?

During a lip filler procedure, the injection specialist will apply a topical anesthetic to the lips to minimize pain or discomfort that may be experienced, resulting in patients only possibly experiencing a slight pinching sensation. It is also common for the patient’s eyes to water a bit while the filler is being injected. Only around one-fifth of a teaspoon will be injected into your lips, with the needle never going deeper than 2.5 millimeters.

The filler will be injected into any specifically targeted areas of the lips, likely including the edges of the lips, corners of the mouth, and the curve in the center of the upper lip. If you start to develop significant swelling or bruising during the procedure, the specialist may apply a cold compress throughout the remainder of the procedure to help minimize these reactions. The lip filler procedure itself can take anywhere from 30 minutes to two hours to complete.

How will my lips feel with lip fillers?

Immediately following the injections of lip fillers, it is common for patients to describe their lips as feeling tight or slightly hard due to the increased volume of their lips. They may experience some mild tenderness or discomfort once the topical anesthetic has worn off within the hours following the procedure. Patients can notice that their lips feel a bit bumpy or lumpy as well during the first two weeks following the injections, but this is fairly normal and should dissipate once the filler has fully settled and softened into the lips within about 2 weeks.

Any swelling or bruising that developed from the injections should also disappear entirely within those initial two weeks. Once the lips have fully healed and the filler has completely settled, patients should not be able to feel that they have lip fillers, nor will anyone they kiss, as the lips will feel as if they are completely natural.

What is the recovery process like?

Although swelling and bruising caused by lip fillers are minimized when administered by an experienced and reputable injection specialist, they are still possible. To help reduce swelling or bruising that develops, patients are instructed to apply a cold compress to their lips, which will also help to ease any itchiness or other discomfort as well. Patients will also be instructed to avoid engaging in strenuous physical activity for around 24 to 48 hours following their procedure to further minimize swelling or bruising of the lips. Makeup should also be avoided for the treated area within that first day or two.

To help the filler settle evenly, the specialist will recommend that patients massage the treated area, and sleep with their head elevated while avoiding sleeping on their face. Within two weeks, the filler should be completely settled, and the lips should be healed, with any swelling or irritation having subsided entirely. If you are receiving lip fillers for a specific event, it is highly recommended that you have the procedure completed at least two weeks before the event to ensure that all of the swelling and bruising has completely gone away.
